India has increased the total number of Ramsar sites to 103 by adding the Sukhnan Wetland in Chandigarh and the Sauj Lake in Uttar Pradesh to its list, thereby strengthening the country's commitment to climate protection and biodiversity.

India has recently listed the famous Sukna Wetland in Chandigarh and the Sauj Lake in Uttar Pradesh under the Ramsar International Convention. This brings the total number of the country's protected wetland areas to 103, making India one of the nations with significant biodiversity at the global level. The Ramsar Convention, which was adopted in 1971, promotes the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, and India became a party to the convention in 1992.

The Sukna Wetland, located near Chandigarh, is a major habitat for migratory birds and plays a crucial role in balancing the city's water resources. Sauj Lake, situated in a rural area of Uttar Pradesh, is an essential reservoir for local agriculture and water conservation. The inclusion of both sites in the Ramsar list signals an increase in economic and ecological benefits for local communities, as it can generate new opportunities for tourism and educational activities.

With this step, India has reaffirmed its commitment to wetland conservation, demonstrating that the government is taking active measures to safeguard biodiversity amid environmental challenges. Going forward, plans are also being prepared to assess and protect other potential wetland areas, to ensure the preservation of natural habitats despite the increasing pressures of climate change and urbanization.
