The Indian Air Force appointed Mehtab Singh Deswal as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Eastern Air Command, raising hopes for a new leadership direction in this key command.

The Indian Air Force has appointed Mehtab Singh Deswal, Air Marshal (AVSM, VM), as the Air Officer Commanding‑in‑Chief (AOC‑in‑C) of Eastern Air Command (EAC). Deswal, whose career spans more than four decades, has served in various combat and strategic roles, previously leading aerodrop, air defence and intelligence operations. He has been honoured with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Vayu Sena Medal (VM) for distinguished service, attesting to his professional skill and leadership capability. With this appointment, he has pledged to implement new strategies to enhance security and readiness in the strategic air domain of eastern India.

Eastern Air Command, which is responsible for defending India’s eastern frontiers, particularly the areas adjoining China and Bangladesh, is currently confronting a rapidly changing geopolitical environment and increasing aerial activity. In the new command, Deswal has emphasized strengthening modernised air‑surveillance systems, multi‑domain operations and joint training programmes. He said that by enhancing coordination among all branches within the command, the Indian Air Force’s rapid response capability will become even more effective.

In recent years, the EAC has conducted several large‑scale exercises and international cooperative missions, contributing to regional stability. Military analysts have regarded Deswal’s appointment as a positive step, noting that his extensive experience and strategic outlook could play a crucial role in preparing the Indian Air Force for future challenges. Following this change, senior leadership of the Indian Air Force expects a wave of new energy and innovation in operations under Eastern Air Command.
