Approval of new road construction projects in Mizoram under PMGSY‑IV, a step toward strengthening rural connectivity

To strengthen rural connectivity, several new road construction projects in Mizoram have been approved under the Prime Minister’s Rural Road Scheme‑IV (PMGSY‑IV), which will link remote villages to major urban centers and accelerate economic development.

The central government has approved the construction of more than 1,200 kilometres of new rural roads in Mizoram under Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana‑IV. This initiative includes the construction of two‑lane concrete and bituminous roads to connect over 150 villages to the national highway and state major highway network. A large portion of the funds allocated under the scheme will be used to reduce the urban‑rural divide, facilitate easier access of agricultural produce to markets, and increase the availability of health, education and public services. Specifically, tunnels, bridges and slope‑stabilisation measures have also been incorporated in the project to connect villages located in hilly areas, thereby minimizing the impact of natural disasters such as seasonal floods and landslides.

A collaborative framework with the state government has been established for project implementation, ensuring active participation of local administration, gram panchayats and the public works department. Employment generation is being prioritized during construction; it is estimated that thousands of workers will be provided with temporary and permanent job opportunities. Moreover, after an environmental impact assessment, the road plans have taken wildlife conservation and water‑body protection into account, ensuring compliance with sustainable development principles. Through these initiatives, socio‑economic transformation is expected in Mizoram’s rural areas, creating the prospect of a notable improvement in the living standards of local communities.
