During the distribution ceremony held in Delhi‑NCR under the National Senior Citizens Scheme, Dr. Veerendra Kumar from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Minister Shri B. L. Verma provided 114 senior citizens with 662 assistive devices worth more than 10 lakh rupees, marking an important step toward improving the quality of life in old age.

**National Senior Citizens Scheme**

The National Senior Citizens Scheme, launched in 2017, aims to provide economically disadvantaged senior citizens with essential assistive devices to strengthen their health and standard of living. Under the scheme, various types of devices—such as hearing aids, mobility aids, vision correction tools, and useful bathroom accessories for home use—are distributed with subsidies. In a special distribution event held in the Delhi‑NCR region, a total of 114 senior citizens received 662 assistive devices, costing more than 10 lakh rupees.

During the distribution ceremony, Dr. Veerendra Kumar of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said that, given the growing needs of the elderly population, the government has expanded the scheme and intends to include more devices and services in the future. He also noted that this year the scheme’s budget has been increased, enabling assistance for more beneficiaries. Additionally, Minister Shri B. L. Verma explained that a digital platform was used to ensure transparency and timeliness in the distribution process, allowing immediate reach to eligible senior citizens.

Organized in collaboration with local social organizations and NGOs, this initiative not only promoted the physical independence of senior citizens but also fostered a sense of social inclusion. By using the devices distributed under the scheme, many elderly people have experienced greater ease and self‑reliance in daily tasks. Experts believe that such initiatives will play a crucial role in strengthening the framework for elderly care in India, and the model could be applied to more areas in the future.
