The Ministry of Coal awarded five‑star ratings to 50 coal mines for excellent performance under the Star Rating Programme for FY 2024‑25, recognizing their commitment to safety, productivity, and environmental standards in the industry.

The Ministry of Coal announced in a press release issued today that under the Star Rating Programme for fiscal year 2024‑25, 50 coal mines have received a five‑star rating. The programme has been running since 2019 and aims to promote standards of safety, productivity, environmental compliance and energy efficiency in the coal sector. Ratings are awarded based on achievements in four main categories—safety, production, environmental protection and management—where points are accumulated for each category to determine the total score.

The ministry’s spokesperson said that the mines that earned five‑star ratings have not only maintained high production levels but have also shown remarkable progress in reducing the accident rate by more than 30 %, improving waste management and controlling greenhouse gas emissions. This recognition will serve as an inspiration for mines that are contributing to national energy goals while ensuring a safe and sustainable working environment for their employees and local communities.

Industry experts believe that such incentive schemes can accelerate technological innovation and management improvements in the coal sector. Moreover, this rating will help mines attract future investment, secure additional resources for technology upgrades and skill development. The ministry has encouraged all rated mines to continue maintaining this level and to meet new challenges.
