Kochi‑based Cochin Shipyard Limited has completed the keel‑laying ceremony for the first next‑generation missile vessel (NGMV) being developed for the Indian Navy, which is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime defence capability.

At Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, the keel‑laying ceremony for the first next‑generation missile vessel (NGMV) being built for the Indian Navy was held today. The ceremony was attended by senior naval officers, representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the shipyard management and several leading industry experts. Along with the keel laying, a brief introduction of the vessel’s design and technical features was given, including advanced radar, electronic warfare systems and long‑range missile capabilities. The vessel is being developed under India’s indigenous defence production strategy, which will reduce dependence on foreign imports and strengthen the domestic industrial base.

Cochin Shipyard Limited has built several major ships for the Indian Navy over the past decades, including prominent frigates, corvettes and support vessels. The NGMV project has been aligned with the Indian Navy’s future deployment plan, which aims to strengthen fast, multi‑role and network‑centric capabilities on the maritime surface. The construction period for this vessel is targeted to be completed within approximately five years, after which it will be deployed to safeguard India’s maritime boundaries, monitor sea trade routes and provide rapid response in potential conflict situations.

This initiative is regarded as a significant step towards modernising India’s maritime security framework, where indigenous technological innovation and strategic autonomy are being prioritised. Successful construction of the NGMV will not only enhance the Navy’s combat capability but also contribute to making India’s naval industry competitive on a global level.
