Communications Minister Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasoni announced a new strategy to boost India’s participation in 6G technology, aiming to secure a 10% share in international patents and standard setting.

Dr. Chandr Shekhar Pemmasoni recently pledged to strengthen India’s role in the development of 6G technology as part of a review of the National Communication Policy. He explained that after the widespread deployment of 5G networks, India now needs to secure a leading position in the standards and patents of next‑generation mobile communications. To this end, the government has set a target that India’s contribution to international 6G standard‑setting bodies (such as 3GPP, ITU) must account for at least 10 percent of the total patents and standard‑making activity. This ambition will not only make Indian industry globally competitive but also accelerate innovation in areas such as the digital economy, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and defense.

To achieve this goal, the central government has proposed several concrete steps. First, additional funding will be allocated to the national research and development budget for 6G technology, enabling universities, research institutes, and start‑ups to establish experimental laboratories and test networks. Second, major telecom operators in India will be encouraged to participate in international standard‑setting workshops.
