The Indian Navy has recently officially inducted its first indigenous multi‑purpose vessel INS Samarth into service, marking a significant milestone towards India's maritime security and indigenous defense production.

The Indian Navy has officially commissioned its first indigenous multi‑purpose vessel (MCMV) “INS Samarthak”, ushering in a new chapter of autonomy in the country's maritime defence capabilities. The vessel was developed under the Indian Navy’s ‘Indigenous and Self‑Made’ (Make in India) initiative and was built at one of India’s leading shipyards, Corian Shipbuilding Limited, Kolkata. Indian defence scientists, engineers and naval experts collaborated on the design and construction, making it not only technologically advanced but also cost‑competitive. INS Samarthak is equipped with the latest anti‑mine detection system, a multi‑roller remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), enabling it to provide effective protection against mineral, mine and anomalous water currents.

The inclusion of INS Samarthak will give the Indian Navy multi‑dimensional capability in maritime security, mine‑clearance and humanitarian assistance operations. The vessel is likely to be deployed on the eastern and western maritime borders, where India faces challenges such as piracy, marine terrorism and the protection of strategic sea lanes. This step will promote self‑reliance in India’s maritime defence and reduce dependence on foreign equipment.

The Ministry of Defence has described the achievement as “a decisive progress towards indigenisation in defence production” and has signalled plans to build more indigenous vessels in the future, including ships with anti‑submarine warfare and anti‑aircraft capabilities. Thus, INS Samarthak not only strengthens the Indian Navy’s capabilities but also represents a significant step in the broader perspective of national security.
