With the administrative consultation of the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Indian Survey Department has marked 28 major geo‑physical structures located in Ladakh on the official map with standard locations and names, bringing new precision to regional planning and security.

After detailed consultations with the administrative representatives of Ladakh, the central government has formally incorporated a total of 28 locations into the official topographic map of the Indian Survey Department (ISD), complete with their standard coordinates and correct geographic names. These geo‑spatial features include major mountain passes, glaciers, rivers, valleys, and tourism‑centric areas, such as the Zanskar Valley, Shyok River, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Lohiyang Pass, and Kyaber Peak, among many other important points. The purpose of this updated mapping is to accurately depict Ladakh's rugged terrain and to enhance the reliability of data for national‑level planning, development, and disaster‑management activities.

The spokesperson for the Survey Department said that in recent decades, cartographic inconsistencies in many remote areas of Ladakh had caused challenges in infrastructure, climate research, and border‑security. The new mapping process employed Digital Aerial Survey (DAS) and ground‑truthing techniques, determining each site's latitude and longitude with centimeter‑level precision. This step will not only provide accurate geodata for national highways, water‑storage projects, and tourism development, but will also aid border‑security agencies in strategic planning.

The Ladakh Development Authority described this mapping as a "regional development and environmental protection for a m".
