The Rural Development Department and the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department have launched a coordinated program under the “Viksit Bharat‑Ji Ram Ji” scheme to increase fodder production and strengthen livestock infrastructure, expected to boost farmers’ income and improve national dairy production.

The central government recently announced the “Viksit Bharat‑Ji Ram Ji” scheme, whose main objective is to empower livestock farming in rural areas and systematically increase fodder production. Under this scheme, the Rural Development Department and the Livestock and Dairy Department (DAHD) have launched a joint initiative, in which crop‑based fodder gardens, irrigation facilities, and modern animal housing construction will be prioritized in major agri‑livestock zones. Under the scheme, more than 1000 fodder production centers will be established at the state level in selected districts, where farmers will be provided with seeds of high‑yielding crop varieties, advanced agricultural technology and advice from technicians.

For strengthening basic livestock infrastructure, the departments have proposed establishing a network of milking units, animal health inspection centers, and cold storage facilities. Through these facilities, small and medium‑scale dairy farmers are likely to gain better market access and price stability. In addition, the regular presence of veterinarians and vaccination programmes will be reinforced, which will increase animals’ disease resistance and reduce production declines.

This initiative is coordinated with the National Livestock Development Plan and is being seen as a significant step toward reviving the rural economy. Experts believe that the increase in fodder production and modernization of basic facilities will not only improve farmers’ incomes but also strengthen the country’s food security and export capacity. Continuous cooperation between the centre, state and local bodies and timely fund flow have been deemed essential for the success of this joint programme.
