The Indian Navy’s latest multi‑purpose vessel “Sudarshni” has departed from Italy’s Livorno shipyard for maritime security and humanitarian assistance missions, signalling a new development in India‑Italy defence cooperation.

Under Lokayan 2026, the Indian Navy has initiated several major projects to strengthen its maritime power, including the construction of the latest multi‑purpose vessel “Sudarsani”.

Built at the world‑famous shipyard in Livorno, Italy, this vessel is equipped with a modern anti‑submarine system, long‑range radar, and a multi‑tiered communications network, enabling it to perform maritime security, anti‑piracy, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

The design of the vessel incorporates Italian naval technology tailored to India’s specific requirements, giving new direction to defense‑technology cooperation between the two countries.

At the launch, senior Indian Navy officers and representatives from the Italian shipyard issued a joint statement, expressing a commitment to deepen cooperation in view of the growing challenges to maritime security.

The launch of “Sudarsani” aligns with India’s maritime strategic objectives, particularly in safeguarding the major maritime trade routes of Hindustan and ensuring a sustained presence in the Indian Ocean.

In the future, this vessel will be integrated with other modern platforms of the Indian Navy, significantly enhancing tactical flexibility and operational capability.

Sudarsani’s departure demonstrates that India is strengthening its maritime power not only at the national level but also through international cooperation.

This step takes the India‑Italy bilateral defense partnership to new heights and is viewed as a positive indicator for regional stability and maritime security.
