Narendra Bhushan has been appointed as Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, bringing new energy and policy direction to the ministry.
Assuming the post of Secretary of the newly appointed Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Narendra Bhushan marks a significant step toward writing a new chapter in the government's environmental policy. The appointment replaces former Secretary, Mr. Rakesh Kumar, who was serving as Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs and retired in early 2025. Based on the report presented to the Prime Minister, Narendra Bhushan was selected for the position, with the aim of bringing innovation and efficiency to the ministry's functioning.
Narendra Bhushan's career began in the 1985 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), and he has held several senior positions in the Environment and Forest Department. Earlier, he served as the head of the National Forest Policy Implementation Team, where he developed new strategies for forest conservation and afforestation programmes. Additionally, he participated in numerous multilateral forums to strengthen India's role at the international level in the field of climate change. Because of his experience and deep understanding of policy formulation, he was deemed suitable for this role.
Under the ministry's new direction, Narendra Bhushan plans to accelerate adaptation and mitigation policies for climate change. He is expected to promote public‑private partnerships to achieve the national green energy target and to emphasize the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in rural areas. Moreover, he intends to launch new initiatives for wildlife conservation and biodiversity protection. This step is expected to make India's environmental commitments more robust and effective.
