The “Surya Ghar” scheme launched by the Prime Minister is now being regarded as a widespread popular movement, said senior social activist and veteran politician Shri Prahlad Joshi, who is active in both urban and rural areas.

The “Surya Ghar” programme launched by the Prime Minister, whose core objective is to provide affordable and sustainable housing through solar energy, has rapidly spread nationwide over the past two years. In its initial phase, the scheme was primarily implemented in government residential projects, but over time the private sector, community groups, and volunteer organisations have also adopted this model. In rural areas, many villages have collectively installed solar panels, making their homes energy‑independent, while in urban areas a notable increase in demand for modular houses equipped with compact solar modules is being observed. This process has not only reduced electricity costs but also yielded clear environmental benefits, strengthening national efforts against climate change.

Mr Prahlad Joshi, one of the chief advisors of the initiative, said that “Surya Ghar” is no longer just a government policy; it has become a social movement in which citizens are actively participating. He explained that several non‑governmental organisations have run training programmes that have equipped local artisans with the technical capability to install solar panels, thereby also generating employment. Moreover, various state governments are incorporating the “Surya Ghar” model into their respective schemes, creating an integrated strategy at the national level. Experts believe that to sustain and expand this movement, financial incentives, easy loan facilities, and technical support need to be further strengthened, so that the goals of energy security and sustainable development can be widely achieved.
