India's Prime Minister, recalling Swami Vivekananda's famous speech at the 1893 World Religion Conference, highlighted India's cultural and spiritual role on today's global stage at a cultural event held in Chicago.

Prime Minister Remembers Swami Vivekananda’s 1893 Speech at International Cultural Forum in Chicago

At the international cultural forum held in Chicago, India's Prime Minister recalled Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech delivered at the World Parliament of Religions in 1893 during his address. He said that “Vivekananda not only presented India’s spiritual heritage but also the universal values of humanity before the world” and presented this ideology as an inspiration for today’s global cooperation and dialogue. The Prime Minister also emphasized that Swami’s ideas laid the foundation of Indian nationalism and continue to strengthen the importance of cultural diplomacy in India’s foreign policy.

Swami Vivekananda’s speech is often referred to as “India’s first representation in America,” in which he presented the spirit of “Satyam eva jayate” before the world and delivered a message of unity in diversity. On this occasion, the Indian embassy, the local Indian community, and several cultural organisations jointly organised a special programme that revived Swami’s ideas through classical music, dance and lectures. The Prime Minister described this platform as an opportunity to honour the contributions of the Indian diaspora and to deepen India–United States relations. He said that India’s history, culture and spirituality have emerged as a vital pillar in contemporary international cooperation, and Swami Vivekananda’s legacy serves as a guiding light in this direction.

This commemoration not only highlights Indian cultural identity but also reinforces the use of “soft power” in India’s foreign policy. The Prime Minister urged all attendees to carry forward Swami Vivekananda’s message by adopting the principles of diversity, tolerance and community cooperation, thereby taking a concrete step toward global peace and prosperity.
