Considering Indian Shipping Corporation (SCI) as the main pillar of the country’s maritime strength and the indigenous shipbuilding scheme, Sarbhanand Sonowal emphasized the need to promote public‑private partnership and technological self‑reliance in this sector.

Indian Shipping Corporation (SSC) Seen as the Focus of India’s Maritime and Shipbuilding Strategy

Sarbhanand Sonewal, speaking about the Indian Shipping Corporation (SSC) as the focal point of the country’s maritime and shipbuilding strategy, said that this public enterprise is not only strengthening India’s commercial shipping but also playing a crucial role in developing naval capabilities. He noted that SSC has built and operated various classes of container, tanker, and bulk carriers in recent years, thereby reducing dependence on imports in the domestic shipping market. In this context, Sonewal regarded the new industrial policies and financial incentives established under the government’s “Make in India” initiative as catalysts for SSC’s expansion plan.

Several key initiatives are underway for SSC’s expansion, including collaboration with the Royal Indian Naval Yard (RINY) located in eastern India and with Bombay Shipping Limited on the western coast. Sonewal said that these collaborations will accelerate technology transfer and incorporate modern designs and environmentally friendly technologies into Indian shipbuilding. He also mentioned that attracting foreign investors under a public‑private partnership (PPP) model can propel the Indian shipping industry to compete globally.

Looking ahead, Sonewal advised SSC to invest in advanced technologies such as maritime logistics, hydrogen‑based fuel ships, and autonomous navigation systems. He said that achieving self‑reliance in these areas will not only strengthen national security but also establish India as a leading maritime power on the world stage. Thus, Sarbhanand Sonewal clarified that the Indian Shipping Corporation is poised to become a pivotal force in India’s maritime future.
