With the consultation of the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Indian Survey Department has depicted 28 major geographical structures on the official map with their standard locations and names, which is expected to improve regional planning and security.

The central government, after extensive consultations with local administration and experts in Ladakh, has marked a total of 28 sites on the official map of the Survey of India, assigning them standard coordinates and correct geographic names. This initiative aims to enhance geospatial accuracy in Ladakh, facilitate planning of development projects, and strengthen national security. The marked sites include prominent mountain peaks, valleys, reservoirs, traditional villages, and strategic passes, which are widely used for tourism, climate studies, and border security.

Ladakh, which became a centrally administered territory in 2019, has long faced special challenges in mapping due to its harsh geographic conditions and border situation. In recent years, disparities and outdated information in some areas had impeded administrative functions. This new mapping process will not only improve the effectiveness of government schemes but also provide local communities with a clear identification of their rights and resources.

The head of the Survey Department said that this step will increase the use of digital mapping and GIS technology, providing accurate data for disaster management, water resource planning, and infrastructure development. Additionally, national security agencies have highlighted the importance of this mapping for border surveillance and strategic deployment. Local representatives of Ladakh praised the initiative, stating that it will be a milestone in the region’s development journey and that collaboration will continue for more detailed geodata collection in the future.
