The ministry, considering the potential impacts of Cyclone Arnav, conducted a comprehensive review of airport security, flight operations, and emergency response plans to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation recently conducted a detailed assessment of Cyclone Arnav’s progress and its potential impacts, focusing primarily on the operational status of major airports on the east coast, airlines’ flight plans, and the readiness of emergency services. In collaboration with the Indian Meteorological Department, meteorologists tracked Arnav’s intensity, trajectory, and potential rainfall‑pressure, revealing that the risk of flooding and high winds could be greater at certain key airports, especially Kolkata, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam. In this context, the ministry convened all relevant agencies to develop a coordinated action plan, which included safety inspections of airport runways, terminals, and navigation equipment, deployment of additional ground staff, and updates to emergency evacuation procedures.
Regarding flight operations, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) notified airlines of potential cancellations, delays, and alternative routes, and established dedicated communication channels to provide passengers with advance information. Several airlines have already suspended or rerouted flights to areas affected by Arnav, while the Indian Air Force has also been deployed to deliver essential supplies and medical assistance. The ministry also stated that, in cooperation with emergency services, swift measures will be taken to improve drainage and strengthen infrastructure in flood‑prone areas near airports, prioritizing the safety of passengers and aviation personnel.
