The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of the incident in which three students were injured when plaster from the roof of a dilapidated building collapsed at a government school in Udaipur district of Rajasthan, and promptly directed local authorities to investigate.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident in which three students were injured due to plaster falling from the roof of a dilapidated classroom in a government school in Udaipur district, Rajasthan. Under this step, the NHRC immediately informed the State Education and Public Works Department and the relevant local authorities so that a detailed investigation into the causes of the accident can be conducted and necessary corrective measures taken.

The building of this government school in Udaipur, which has become dilapidated over many years due to lack of maintenance, experienced the plaster fall because safety standards were not observed. The injured students include a 12-year-old student and two 10-year-old students, who were discharged from the hospital after receiving primary treatment. The NHRC has requested interrogation of the school management, principal and the staff members holding relevant duties, and has demanded a comprehensive preventive inspection of the school premises to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.

The Rajasthan government has already expressed its condolences over the incident and stated that an inspection team from the Education Department has been dispatched immediately, and that both the structural assessment of the building and the safety arrangements inside the classroom are being re‑evaluated. This initiative by the NHRC reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of students in educational institutions and also indicates that the Human Rights Commission can intervene suo motu in cases where students’ lives and health are at risk.
