Home Minister Amit Shah, after speaking out against chittha traders in Punjab, has decided to meet the families of those who lost their lives, which will clarify the direction of government action on this controversial trade.

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has recently expressed his intention to meet the families of those who have lost their lives after publicly speaking out against chittha (illegal loan) traders in the Mansa, Sangrur, and Gurdaspur regions of Punjab. This step comes after highlighting the misuse of rising loans and the problems faced by distressed farmers and small business owners in those areas, where multiple reports of abuse and violence against chittha traders have been received. The minister said that the government is taking this issue seriously and will ensure appropriate action through hearings of the victims’ families.

In the past few months, several violent incidents related to chittha trade have been reported in Punjab, including threats, harassment, and occasional physical assaults on farmers unable to repay loans. The state government had formed a special team to investigate these cases, but criticism arose over delays in judicial processes and a lack of effective action in many instances. In this context, the central government directed the Home Ministry to work with the state to find a solution to the problem and provide necessary assistance to the victims.

During Amit Shah’s visit, meetings will be held not only with the families but also with representatives of the local administration, police, and social organizations. These meetings will discuss strict monitoring to curb chittha trade, loan restructuring plans, and an economic relief package for the victims. The government has also indicated that, if deemed necessary, stringent legal measures will be taken against chittha traders, which may include seizure of their property and criminal prosecutions. This initiative is being regarded as a significant step toward ending loan misuse in Punjab and delivering justice to the affected sections.
