The Ministry of Health has recommended the immediate suspension of production licenses for medicines that do not meet the specified quality standards, in order to protect public health from potential risks.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recently proposed to immediately suspend the manufacturing licenses of drugs that fail to meet the critical standards identified in quality testing, based on a detailed report. This measure follows several cases in which certain market‑available medicines were found to contain reduced amounts of active ingredients or unauthorized substances. The ministry stated that this decision prioritises public health protection and is a necessary step to prevent the spread of non‑standard drugs.

Currently, the Ministry of Health has formed a special working committee in collaboration with the National Drug Regulatory Agency (CDSCO). The committee is compiling a list of affected companies and conducting detailed audits of their production facilities. The process will include not only license suspension but also the rapid recall of existing stock, re‑testing, and, if necessary, a refund procedure. The ministry also announced that, to prevent future incidents, stringent inspections will be enforced at every stage of the raw material supply chain, manufacturing process, and quality control.

Representatives from the pharmaceutical industry have expressed mixed reactions to the proposal. Some acknowledged the importance of public safety and pledged cooperation, while others warned that abrupt license suspensions could disrupt production and affect drug availability. Meanwhile, the ministry advised consumers to purchase medicines only from certified pharmacies and reliable brands, and to report any suspicious drugs immediately to health authorities. This step is seen as a significant initiative to strengthen drug safety standards in India and to provide reliable healthcare.
