Digital Bharat Fund, the Department of Telecommunications, the Tamil Nadu Government, and the Tamil Nadu FiberNet Corporation have entered into an agreement to use the BharatNet network under the ABP, which is expected to bring significant improvement in rural broadband access in the state.

Digital Bharat Fund, Department of Telecommunications, Tamil Nadu Government and Tamil Nadu FiberNet Corporation (TNFC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding today outlining the comprehensive utilization of BharatNet fiber‑optic network within the Access Broadband Programme (ABP).

Under this agreement, the existing BharatNet infrastructure will be adapted for the expansion of high‑speed internet services in rural and remote areas, thereby connecting schools, health centres, agricultural units and small businesses to digital services.

BharatNet, which is the main component of the national fibre‑optic network, aims to provide broadband at low cost to every village in India. The Digital Bharat Fund finances this mission, while the Department of Telecommunications oversees technical standards and regulatory guidelines. The Tamil Nadu government has launched several initiatives in recent years to promote digital literacy and e‑governance, but connectivity in rural areas remains limited.
