ESIC Medical College and Hospital in Faridabad successfully completed a cornea transplantation surgery today, giving a visually impaired patient new hope. The operation was performed under the leadership of the head of the ophthalmology department, Dr. Rohit Sharma, who said that the patient had experienced severe vision loss due to advanced cataract and corneal sclerosis since last year. During the operation, the transplanted cornea was obtained from the patient’s own corneal scraping, reducing the risk of immune rejection.
ESIC Hospital, which is a hub for employees’ social security and health services, has previously performed such complex procedures in ophthalmology, but this is the first case in which a permanent improvement in the patient’s vision has been reported following a cornea transplant. The hospital team has adopted a special protocol for the patient’s regular follow‑up after surgery, which includes anti‑inflammatory drops and antibacterial treatment.
This success demonstrates that government hospitals can also use state‑of‑the‑art medical technologies to provide patients with high‑quality care. ESIC has announced plans to establish a dedicated center for additional cornea transplants in the coming months, so that visually impaired patients across the country can receive timely treatment.
