Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DRI) takes action against gold smuggling on the India‑Bangladesh border, seizes more than 8.3 kg of foreign gold, and arrests 4 people.

The Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DIR) recently seized more than 8.3 kilograms of foreign gold in a joint operation conducted on the India‑Bangladesh border and arrested four suspects. This action is part of a stringent crackdown against ongoing gold smuggling at the border, where smugglers illegally transport gold to evade lower taxes, import duties, and customs regulations. DIR officials stated that this success was made possible through several months of intelligence, surveillance, and cooperation with Bangladeshi security agencies.

Gold smuggling is subject to particularly harsh penalties under India’s export‑import regulations, as it adversely affects national financial stability and foreign exchange reserves. In recent years, similar cases have seen large‑scale seizures of gold multiple times, highlighting the need to strengthen border control. The gold seized this time was primarily attempting to be brought from Bangladesh into India, where high rates of customs duty and taxes attract smugglers.

After the investigation, the four arrested individuals have been handed over to customs and police officials for further legal proceedings. Officials said that such successful operations will warn smugglers and promote stricter monitoring and international cooperation in the future. In this regard, customs departments of both countries have assured continuous information sharing at the border and continued joint action, ensuring higher levels of transparency and regulation in import‑export.
