The India Meteorological Department has installed a new technological system in the country to aid decision‑making based on cyclones and marine weather, with expectations of improving disaster preparedness and maritime safety.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently deployed an advanced Decision Support System (DSS) for cyclone warnings and marine weather services across the country. The system combines automated data processing, real‑time simulation, and risk‑assessment models, enabling meteorologists and maritime officials to make faster and more accurate decisions.

The primary objective of this DSS is to forecast cyclone genesis, track, and intensity, and to issue tailored warnings for coastal areas, ports, and the navy. In view of the heavy losses caused by cyclones in recent years, IMD collaborated with national and international experts to develop the system. The system integrates high‑resolution satellite imagery, sea‑level, and wind‑speed data, enabling forecasts up to 48 hours in advance.

Under the project, training programmes have also been provided to the decision‑making units of marine weather services so that they can fully leverage the new technology. Moreover, the system is coordinated with public warning networks to inform coastal communities in a timely manner. An IMD spokesperson said that this step will enhance efficiency in disaster management and ensure the safety of the coastal economy. The initiative has also received support from the Indian government, setting a precedent for similar technological advancements in the future.
