The President announced 14 new appointments in five major high courts, expected to reduce judicial workload and improve access to justice.
President appoints 14 judicial officers as judges and senior judges in Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand and Karnataka High Courts today.
This appointment was made under Articles 124 and 217 of the Constitution, wherein the President must accept the recommendations of the Judicial Collegium for the appointment of High Court judges. The latest appointments include experienced lawyers and judicial officers from diverse regions and social backgrounds, potentially enhancing judicial diversity.
The primary objective of these appointments is to reduce the growing backlog of cases in the High Courts and accelerate the judicial process. In recent years, several vacancies in these five High Courts remained unfilled, leading to increased delays in hearing cases. The new appointments will not only expedite the hearing of existing cases but also improve the efficiency of the judicial system in the future.
The President also stated that maintaining judicial independence and transparency is the foundation of democracy. He appealed to the judges to remain committed to constitutional principles and to give the highest priority to the principles of justice. This move is expected to restore confidence in judicial institutions while strengthening representation of various social classes.
