Consumers in Karnataka are facing a similar increase in the prices of ghee, butter and cheese after the rising costs of milk and curd, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
Recently, the rise in milk and curd prices across various markets in Karnataka has been accompanied by a notable increase in the prices of ghee, butter, and paneer. According to data from the Department of Agriculture and the State Food and Nutrition Department, the cost of these dairy products has risen on average by 12–15 % over the past few months. This trend is primarily driven by higher raw material prices, increased transportation costs, and reduced production during the winter season.
A representative of a consumer organization explained that “the main reason for the rise in ghee and butter prices is the increased cost of raw milk and the surge in feed prices used in the production process. Paneer prices, which are mainly derived from milk, are being affected by similar factors. Additionally, the recent irregular rainfall in the state has led to a decline in the nutrition of dairy animals, impacting both the quality and quantity of milk.”
Amid this situation, the state government has announced several relief measures, such as increased subsidies for dairy farmers and a special feed supply program to boost milk production. Consumers have also been advised to focus on affordable alternatives and to compare prices in local markets. If this trend continues, it could become even more challenging for many families in Karnataka to afford dairy products, potentially having long‑term effects on food security and nutrition.
