Union Home and Co‑operative Minister Amit Shah publicly praised the Chief Minister of Assam and the state police for delivering a decisive blow to drug networks and maintaining continuous action, thereby giving new impetus to de‑addiction efforts at the national level.

Central Home and Co‑operation Minister Amit Shah recently congratulated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the leadership of Assam Police on their extensive campaigns against narcotics. He said that decisive blows to drug networks in Assam, the interdiction of several large smuggling caravans, and the seizure of thousands of kilograms of illicit drugs have played a crucial role in strengthening national security. Along with this commendation, he emphasized the need to reinforce coordinated action between central and state agencies—such as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Border Security Force, and local police—to eradicate such networks from their roots in the future.

Assam, located geographically near an international border, has long been considered one of the major routes for drug smuggling. The trafficking of opium, heroin, and synthetic drugs in this region has deepened social and economic problems, leading to increased drug addiction among youth and higher crime rates. Under the National Narcotics Control Plan, the central government has promoted special operations, rapid investigations, and community awareness programmes, which have successfully crushed several large gangs in Assam. In this context, Assam Police have recently detained several key gang leaders in their campaigns and seized large quantities of narcotics, causing severe disruption to the drug smuggling supply chain.

In the future, Minister Shah said that centre‑state cooperation will be further strengthened, with expanded information sharing, technical assistance, and training programmes. He urged the Assam government and police to remain continuously vigilant.
