The Centre today launched a new livestock insurance portal through an integrated digital platform to provide insurance coverage to small and medium livestock farmers, expecting to improve transparency and accessibility in the insurance process.
The Union Government's Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Panchayati Raj, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, inaugurated the Livestock Insurance portal today under a new digital initiative. The portal specifically provides small and medium‑scale livestock farmers with the ability to purchase insurance policies, file claims, and track policy status. The government's objective is to simplify the insurance process, enhance farmers' risk‑bearing capacity, and reduce economic losses arising from natural disasters or diseases affecting livestock.
In recent years, the livestock insurance scheme has been rolled out in multiple phases, but due to paper‑based procedures, limited reach, and lack of information, many beneficiaries could not fully benefit from the scheme. The new portal has been developed with a mobile application, multilingual interface, and online payment options to overcome these challenges. Through this platform, farmers can select an appropriate insurance plan based on the type, age, and health condition of their animal and pay the insurance premium instantly.
According to Ministry of Finance data, the number of beneficiaries registered under livestock insurance saw a notable increase in the last financial year, yet delays in claim settlement and lack of transparency remained major issues. The new system incorporates an AI‑based verification module to automate the claims process, which will shorten settlement timelines and provide prompt relief to farmers. Experts believe that this digital initiative will raise insurance awareness in rural areas and have a positive impact on the sustainability of agriculture‑based incomes.
Following the portal's launch, the ministry also announced that it will conduct state‑level training programmes and information campaigns to educate farmers about using this new facility. This step is expected to accelerate digital transformation in the agricultural sector, thereby enhancing national food security and the rural economy.
