The government and bank management provided clarity on the steps and timeline for the strategic restructuring of IDBI Bank, with a particular emphasis on capital restructuring, asset management, and operational efficiency.

IDBI Bank Limited, which has been in a restructuring phase since its acquisition by the government in 2024, today issued a joint statement outlining the key aspects of the bank's strategic restructuring plan. The statement says the bank is working to strengthen its capital structure by raising additional capital while also reducing risk‑weighted assets. In this process, the bank has prioritized selling non‑performing assets, restructuring its loan portfolio, and making changes to the management team.

The bank's chairman stated that the primary aim of the restructuring is to enhance the bank's profitability and competitiveness, thereby improving customer service and enabling the expansion of new financial services through digital platforms. He also clarified that training and skill‑development programmes will be run for employees during the restructuring, so that the workforce can be aligned with the new business model. Additionally, the bank pledged to strengthen its risk‑management framework to improve its loan portfolio, which should reduce default rates.

The government has also announced some flexibility in the regulatory framework to support this restructuring, allowing the bank to secure new investor participation and public‑private partnership opportunities for capital raising. This move is expected to enable IDBI Bank to restore its credibility and financial stability in the Indian banking sector, thereby protecting the interests of investors, customers, and employees.
