The inter‑ministerial group formed under the leadership of the Ministry of Finance recently presented to the Cabinet recommendations for asset monetisation proposals worth more than 1,100 crore rupees. These proposals mainly include government‑owned real estate, land holdings, and equity in some public utilities. The group stated that the proposed assets have been valued according to market‑based criteria and it has been ensured that public interest is not harmed.

The Cabinet approved these recommendations under the “alternative mechanism”, which differs from traditional tender and auction processes. Under this mechanism, asset valuation and sale will be carried out by an independent valuation board, ensuring transparency and competitive bidding. The government claims that this process will not only generate revenue but also establish a new standard for efficient management of public assets.

Analysts believe that this step will help the government reduce fiscal deficit in the coming years and provide investors with a new avenue to invest in government assets. Additionally, this initiative offers a robust framework to make the use of public sector property more productive, thereby contributing to long‑term economic stability.
