India's premier scientific institutions CSIR and South RIS have jointly developed a comprehensive collaborative framework to strengthen research capacity, technology transfer, and the innovation ecosystem in developing countries.

India's leading scientific research institution, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and South‑RIS (Southern Regional Innovation System) have entered into a comprehensive agreement aimed at empowering science, technology and innovation in developing countries. Under this agreement, both parties will exchange resources and expertise for technical training, joint research projects, intellectual property sharing, and the development of the start‑up ecosystem. In particular, collaboration will be prioritized in areas such as agri‑tech, clean energy, water management and health technology, where these countries need immediate solutions.

CSIR has proposed linking its extensive laboratories and industry‑academia collaboration model with South‑RIS's regional network, enabling local scientists to access advanced equipment and training. South‑RIS, which connects innovation institutions across several South Asian and African countries, sees this initiative as an opportunity to align its existing capabilities with international standards. The two institutions will exchange knowledge through joint funding programmes, scholarship schemes and an annual science fair, providing young researchers with the platform needed to compete on the global stage.

The collaboration is expected to lead to a significant increase in research and development (R&D) investment in developing countries, as well as provide local enterprises with technological robustness and market access. Experts believe that such an international cooperation model will not only accelerate the pace of innovation but also make a substantial contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Looking ahead, there is consideration of expanding the agreement to involve additional countries and international organizations in the initiative.
