India's premier border security agency, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), intercepted a large-scale smuggling of explosives at Nhava Sheva port, seizing 10,000 kilograms of fireworks worth 3 crore rupees, thereby averting a potential threat to national security.

DRI Seizes 10,000 Kilograms of Explosives at Nhava Sheva Port

After a detailed investigation at Nhava Sheva port, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) confiscated a large quantity of 10,000 kilograms of explosive material, valued at approximately 3 crore rupees. The operation was carried out in cooperation with the port’s cargo inspection department and local police, after inconsistencies were identified in shipping documents and the suspected container was detained. The seized fireworks were composed of various chemical mixtures, including rapidly detonating components that could have been used in terrorist or criminal activities.

The DRI classified the case as a serious breach of national security and announced further investigations to identify the network behind the smuggling group. Officials note that Nhava Sheva, a major hub for maritime-land trade, is frequently used as an international smuggling route, and continuous monitoring is essential to curb this type of smuggling. This action not only prevented economic loss but also minimized potential public safety risks.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the smuggling of explosives at India’s major ports, prompting security agencies to strengthen customs inspections, electronic surveillance, and inter‑agency coordination. This successful operation highlighted the DRI’s effective methodology and the importance of international cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to take stringent measures to prevent similar smuggling in the future.
