The Indian National Highway Authority (INDRAN) has issued a new standardized framework for the implementation of multi‑lane free‑flow tolling (MLFT) on national highways. This guide establishes uniform technical standards for the design, installation, maintenance, and data management of tolling systems.

The Indian National Highway Authority (INDRAN) has issued a comprehensive guideline for the implementation of Multi‑Lane Free‑Flow Tolling (MLFT) on national highways that are four‑lane and above. This document establishes uniform standards for the design, infrastructure, and operational procedures of tolling systems, with the aim of improving traffic flow on highways, increasing toll collection efficiency, and reducing traffic congestion.

Key components of the guidelines include toll boosters, Remote Identification (RFID) tags, and networking protocols between toll‑collection points. In addition, the authority has defined technical specifications for the physical installation of tolling equipment, signaling, and data security. Standardized design criteria will help highway managers reduce costs, simplify maintenance schedules, and enhance the reliability of toll collection.

Under this initiative, the authority has also proposed an executive framework for collaboration with highway authorities and private tolling operators. According to the guidelines, after the installation of tolling systems, data will be analyzed during a pilot phase to assess performance, thereby laying the groundwork for future improvements. This step is expected to lead to widespread adoption of multi‑lane free‑flow tolling across the Indian highway network, which will prove instrumental in taking the country's road transport efficiency to new heights.
