India's latest Education Policy 2025 has made digital literacy and project‑based learning a priority. New initiatives have been launched to expand access to education in both rural and urban areas.

Education in India is considered the cornerstone of national development. Currently, about 52.8 crore students are enrolled at various levels of primary, secondary and higher education. In 2024, the government gave prominence to digital literacy and skill development in the curriculum under Education Policy 2025. The policy aims to ensure 100 percent primary education and 80 percent secondary education availability by 2027. Additionally, new initiatives have been launched to increase access to education in rural and urban areas. Emphasis has been placed on equal opportunities and holistic development for all students.

The literacy rate remains steady at 74.4 percent, while it falls to 68 percent in rural areas. According to the 2023 National Education Survey, 18.5 crore students are taking classes via digital platforms, which is about 35 percent of the total enrolled students. Moreover, 12 percent of teachers have acquired the ability to use digital tools.

The new education policy has incorporated project‑based learning into the curriculum. Under this, students will have the opportunity to work on real‑world problems. Additionally, schools will organize at least 20 hours of vocational training programs each year, which will enhance students' employability. According to the policy, annual training for teachers will be increased from 12 hours to 18 hours.

Nevertheless, the lack of digital infrastructure in rural areas remains a major challenge. In 2024, only 58 percent of schools have reliable internet connectivity. Moreover, the level of digital literacy among teachers is still 48 percent, limiting the effective use of new technology in classrooms. To overcome these obstacles, the government has planned to establish 30,000 additional internet access points by 2025.

In the coming decades, India's goal is to achieve 90 percent digital coverage in the education sector. To this end, the government has launched the ‘Digital Schools’ initiative, which will prioritize smart classrooms and e‑learning platforms. Additionally, efforts will continue to improve student loan schemes to make higher education more accessible. If these plans are implemented on schedule, the likelihood of positioning India as a global leader in education by 2030 will increase.

Proper implementation of these efforts can bring about a notable improvement in the quality and reach of education in India.
