Under environmental protection, the government has announced strict regulations to strengthen plastic waste management, imposing new responsibilities on industry, municipal corporations, and the general public.

The Ministry of Environment released a detailed press note today, stating that new regulatory guidelines are being implemented in response to the growing problem of plastic waste in the country. Under these rules, all large and small industries are directed to increase the use of recyclable materials in their production processes to 70 % and to gradually phase out single‑use plastic products. Additionally, municipal corporations are ordered to establish modern facilities for waste collection, segregation, and reprocessing to ensure proper disposal of waste. The ministry also announced that a National Environmental Monitoring Board will be set up to oversee these regulations, imposing fines and restrictive measures on non‑compliant institutions.

In recent years, the volume of plastic waste in India has continued to rise, severely impacting water sources, beaches, and biodiversity. In this context, the government imposed a ban on single‑use plastic bags in 2023, but its impact remained limited in many areas. The new guidelines aim not only to bring about changes on the production side but also to raise consumer awareness and normalize recycling. The ministry has requested cooperation from various state governments, non‑governmental organizations, and industry associations to realize a collective effort toward a sustainable and cleaner environment.
