In Surendranagar district, a woman faced assault and inhumane treatment by her husband and in‑laws when she expressed intent to live with another man; this serious incident has been immediately taken under investigation by the National Human Rights Commission.

A domestic violence case in Surendranagar district of Gujarat has prompted swift action by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

According to local sources, a woman informed her husband and in‑laws that she was considering living with another man, which caused intense discomfort within the family. In response, the husband and other family members inflicted physical violence on the woman, subjecting her to inhumane treatment. The victim immediately filed a complaint with the local police, but the initial investigation raised concerns of irregularities and possible suppression. In light of these indications, the National Human Rights Commission took the matter under “Suo Moto” jurisdiction, indicating that the commission initiated an inquiry without any formal petition.

Through this step, the NHRC signalled a re‑examination of the effectiveness of India’s existing legal framework against domestic violence—such as the Women’s Protection Act (2005) and the Dowry Prohibition Act. The commission has notified local authorities to conduct an immediate, impartial and transparent investigation, provide protection to the victim, and ensure stringent action against the perpetrators. Meanwhile, women’s rights organisations have publicly highlighted the incident, asserting that many women are forced to remain silent in similar circumstances due to social norms and family pressure. The commission’s initiative is expected to accelerate the implementation of a fair process in domestic violence cases in Surendranagar and other regions, ensuring that victims receive the necessary safety and support.
