National Urban Conference 2026
The National Urban Conference 2026, held with the participation of leading urban planners, policymakers, urban management experts, and international partners, presented practical recommendations to improve urban administration, planning, and service delivery in order to realize the vision of a Developed India 2047. The main sessions of the conference involved detailed discussions on integrated models for urban water, sanitation, transport, digital administration, and sustainable infrastructure. Participants emphasized the need to integrate technology into the existing urban management system, adopt data‑driven decision making, and enhance the financial autonomy of local bodies.
Consequently, a detailed action plan was drafted that includes accelerating the implementation of smart city initiatives at the local level, increasing investment in basic services through public‑private partnerships (PPP), and providing capacity‑building training to municipal corporations. Additionally, the conference recommended establishing a climate‑resilient urban planning framework, setting up an infrastructure fund for affordable housing, and setting national standards to deliver fast and transparent services to citizens through urban digital platforms.
To implement these recommendations, the central government has signaled that the Ministry of Urban Affairs will issue special guidelines, while policy adjustments at the state and local levels are also expected in this direction. Experts believe that if these practical steps are adopted in a timely manner, India can strengthen its position as a developed urban nation by 2047, thereby balancing economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
