The Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme‑Urban has added a new dimension to India’s urban development by focusing on affordable housing, social inclusion, and economic empowerment for the urban poor.

The Prime Minister's Housing Scheme‑Urban (PMAY‑Urban) was launched in 2015 as part of the National Urban Poverty Eradication initiative, with the primary objective of providing safe, affordable, and sustainable housing to economically weaker sections. Under the scheme, beneficiaries receive subsidies, loan facilities, and technical assistance, enabling them to either construct their own homes or upgrade existing dwellings to achieve a permanent living condition. To date, the scheme has completed the construction or renovation of more than approximately two crore houses, providing not only roofs to millions of urban poor families but also strengthening their inclusion in the social security net.

Along with housing, the scheme has also prioritized inclusion. Separate subsidy criteria and facilities have been provided specifically to target women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. In many cities, women are being offered technical training and entrepreneurship support to build or upgrade homes themselves, thereby empowering them economically. Additionally, by collaborating with local bodies and banking institutions, loans at low interest rates have been made available, simplifying the process of constructing homes.

Future plans are taking steps to incorporate green construction technologies, energy efficiency, and smart infrastructure to enhance the quality of urban housing. The government has announced additional budget allocations for the scheme's expansion, which will enable more families to receive homes in the next phase and help address the root causes of urban poverty. Thus, the Prime Minister's Housing Scheme‑Urban not only provides housing but also charts a new direction for the development of urban India through social inclusion and economic empowerment.
