The formal inauguration of the new train service from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Savantwadi Road was today conducted by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, raising expectations of a significant boost in connectivity and economic prospects for the Konkan region.
The formal inauguration of a new train service today connecting Mumbai’s major railway hub, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), to the Konkan region’s prominent tourist destination, Savantwadi Road, was held. On this occasion, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal jointly launched the train, with participation from representatives of both ministries, state government officials, and local traders. The service is planned to operate daily, featuring both modern air‑conditioned coaches and sleeper coaches, offering passengers a comfortable and timely travel option.
This initiative is part of broader government efforts to promote economic development and tourism in Konkan. Savantwadi Road, known for its beaches, islands, and historic heritage, will become more accessible through a direct rail link from Mumbai’s commercial hub. This will not only ease market access for local merchants but also inject new vigor into the tourism sector, increasing employment prospects in hotels, restaurants, and local handicraft industries.
The Ministry of Railways indicated that the route will have stops at a total of 12 stations, benefiting intermediate towns and cities as well. The project includes upgrades to infrastructure, modernization of the signaling system, and enhanced track maintenance, improving both safety and speed. The central and Maharashtra governments have supported the service with financial and technical assistance, and discussions are underway to extend the line in the future to connect other Konkan cities.
The launch of the new train service is expected to accelerate the economic flow in Konkan and is regarded as a significant step toward strengthening regional balance within India’s extensive rail network.
