The Ministry of Textiles has launched a comprehensive cleanliness drive to reduce environmental impact, promote resource recycling, and strengthen sustainable development in the industry, emphasizing a new system that converts waste into valuable raw materials.
Ministry of Textiles Announces National Cleanliness Campaign to Promote Hygiene, Sustainable Development, and Waste Reuse in India's Textile Industry
Under this initiative, the ministry plans to offer incentive packages to industry players to adopt a technical system that converts waste into “Kanchan,” a valuable resource. The key objectives include saving water and energy, reducing chemical usage, and recycling waste generated in the production process into new fibers, yarns, and bio‑fuels. To achieve this, the ministry has partnered with various state governments, research institutions, and environmental NGOs, enabling the use of climate‑smart technologies in pilot clusters.
In recent years, India's textile sector has increased its competitiveness in the global market, yet it also faces challenges such as water pollution, chemical waste, and large‑scale waste generation. Aligned with the Swachh Bharat Mission and the National Green Construction Policy, this campaign aims to steer the industry toward a Circular Economy model, where the production‑consumption cycle is closed and waste is minimized. The ministry has stated that under this initiative, it will develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training programs, financial grants, and tax relief, so that enterprises of all sizes can benefit. Experts believe that if concrete steps are taken in this direction, the industry can achieve significant progress.
