The Ministry of Textiles has launched a national-level cleanliness campaign aimed at recycling waste generated in the garment industry into value-added products and promoting sustainable development.

The Ministry of Textiles announced today a comprehensive cleanliness campaign, which will promote a system to convert waste generated during textile production and use into “kanchan”, i.e., a valuable resource. This initiative aligns with the national environmental reforms underway under the Swachh Bharat Mission and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The ministry stated that annually, India generates approximately 15 lakh tonnes of textile waste, most of which ends up in landfills, thereby increasing water, air, and soil pollution. In this context, the campaign will provide financial and technical support for recycling technologies, bio‑based degradable fibers, and innovative projects that create high‑value chemicals and fibers from waste.

The campaign’s main pillars include strengthening collaboration among industry groups, start‑ups, research institutions, and civil society. The ministry has announced the initial phase of pilot projects in several major textile clusters, where waste will be converted into raw materials through recycling, re‑use, and upcycling. Additionally, small and medium enterprises (SME) will be offered special incentive schemes, including tax exemptions, subsidies, and technical training, enabling them to adopt cleaner production processes.

In coordination with the Ministry of Environment and the Health Department, this campaign will be promoted nationwide through awareness programmes, workshops, and digital platforms.
