The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the complaint of physical and moral harassment of a woman by her husband and other relatives in Banswara district and has ordered a swift investigation and appropriate action.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of an incident in Banswara district, Rajasthan, where a woman was beaten and publicly humiliated by her husband and some relatives. This step reflects the Commission’s commitment to women’s safety and the protection of their rights. According to the complaint, the victim faced domestic violence as well as abusive language and physical punishment in a public place, causing widespread concern in the local community. The Commission immediately directed the state police to conduct a swift investigation at the scene, record the testimonies of all parties involved, and provide protection to the victim. It also issued an order to the Department of Women and Child Development to cooperate in the case and provide legal assistance to the victim.

The Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission said that both domestic violence and public humiliation are punishable offenses under the Indian Constitution and numerous legislative provisions. He further noted that in rural areas like Banswara, social norms often make it difficult for women to access justice, making the Commission’s suo motu cognizance an important preventive measure. In this context, the Commission urged the state government to implement special protocols for women’s safety, including sensitivity training for local police, rapid response teams, and the establishment of quick‑help centers for victims.

In light of this incident, social organizations and women’s rights groups have also spoken out, stating that prompt and transparent investigations are essential in such cases to prevent similar occurrences in the future. They are also demanding that the local administration enforce strict rules for women’s safety and prioritize evidence collection and witness protection to secure justice for victims. The Commission’s initiative is hoped to represent a concrete step toward safeguarding women’s rights across Banswara and the entire state.
