The President appointed a total of 14 judicial officers as judges and senior judges in five major High Courts, taking a step to strengthen the judicial power and accelerate the reduction of pending cases.

The President today appointed 14 judicial officers as judges and additional judges in the High Courts of Delhi, Jammu‑Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand and Karnataka. This appointment is made under Articles 217 and 224 of the Constitution of India, which obligate the President to accept the recommendations of the Supreme Court's judicial collegium for the appointment of High Court judges. The appointments include senior advocates, experienced judges of subordinate courts, and experts serving in the legislative service, thereby promoting judicial diversity and regional representation.

The primary objective of these appointments is to fill the existing vacancies in the High Courts and reduce the growing backlog of cases. In recent years, a notable increase in judicial workload has been observed, leading to delays in case disposal in several High Courts. The new appointments are expected not only to improve the speed of judicial processes but also to strengthen the credibility of the judiciary and public trust. Moreover, this step reflects the government's commitment to judicial reforms, emphasizing transparency, merit‑based selection, and social inclusiveness in judicial appointments.

The President said that the appointment of these judges and additional judges will make a significant contribution to balancing the judiciary's workload, ensuring the promptness and accuracy of justice, and safeguarding constitutional values. This appointment aligns with the broader national goal of strengthening the judicial system, thereby helping to restore public confidence in the Indian justice system.
