During the BRICS summit held in New Delhi, the Prime Minister held a bilateral discussion with the Chairperson of the African Union and the President of Burundi, planning to strengthen agreements on trade, investment, climate cooperation, and security issues.

During the BRICS summit held in New Delhi, the Prime Minister held a private bilateral meeting with the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) and the President of the Republic of Burundi. The meeting was set apart from the summit’s main sessions, allowing both parties to engage in an in‑depth discussion on a wide range of cooperation areas. The discussion focused primarily on strategies to promote economic collaboration, especially in infrastructure development, agricultural technology, and the digital economy. Both sides agreed to outline new investment projects under the India‑Africa Economic Forum and to propose special financial facilities for Burundi.

Environmental and climate change issues were also central to the talks. The Prime Minister presented a joint action plan for collaboration on renewable energy, water resource management, and climate adaptation projects under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the parties discussed the possibility of information sharing and training programmes to strengthen regional security and counter‑terrorism cooperation. Both sides regarded the meeting as the beginning of a new phase in India‑Africa relations and pledged to establish regular bilateral dialogue in the future.

This private meeting aligns with the broader objectives of the BRICS summit, which promotes global economic recovery, multilateral cooperation, and coordinated strategies among developing countries. The Chairperson of the African Union praised India as a key partner in Africa’s development, while the President of Burundi highlighted deep friendship and economic cooperation with India as vital to his country’s progress. Thus, the meeting in New Delhi is expected to give new direction to the strategic partnership between the two nations.
