The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has proposed expanding the Authorized Import Gateway to accelerate the import of medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics. This move is expected to increase the availability of foreign products and improve health services.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has proposed an expansion of the Authorized Import Gateway under the Department of Health and Family Welfare to facilitate the import of drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics. Currently, only a limited range of products are eligible for expedited import under this gateway, while other items require lengthy approval processes and additional customs inspections. The proposed expansion will broaden the scope of permissible imports, enabling importers to bring goods to market more quickly and at lower cost.

The ministry’s spokesperson said that this step is essential to improve the post‑pandemic supply chain and increase the availability of health services. Expanding the import gateway will reduce regulatory barriers that impede the supply of drugs and medical devices and will foster competition between domestic and foreign manufacturers. Additionally, providing this facility for cosmetics will make it easier for consumers to access the latest products.

Experts believe that this initiative will stimulate innovation and investment in India’s health sector. Enhancing transparency and timeliness in the import process will ensure that patients receive essential drugs and medical devices promptly. The government must also ensure that products imported under the expanded gateway strictly meet quality and safety standards to protect consumers. The proposal will be advanced through coordination with relevant regulatory bodies and the completion of necessary legal procedures.
