Scientists have identified a new wave-like heat transport process in crystalline materials, which could open new pathways for efficiently converting industrial waste heat into electrical energy.

A collaborative research group of Indian science institutions has recently discovered an unusual wave‑like heat conduction mechanism in crystalline solids, which is considered distinct from the conventional phonon‑based thermal transfer model. This discovery employed high‑precision ultra‑fast laser pulses and neural‑net‑based data analysis, enabling the measurement of energy flow in the solid's molecular lattice in a time‑dependent manner. The results indicate that certain specific crystal structures, especially in two‑dimensional layered materials, can conduct heat in a wave‑like mode, thereby minimizing energy loss and reducing thermal resistance.

This discovery could redefine the possibilities of reusing waste heat in industrial sectors. Currently, globally, heavy industries—such as steel, chemicals, and cement manufacturing—lose about 60 % of the energy generated in their processes as heat, which often cannot be converted into useful energy. By increasing the efficiency of wave‑like heat transfer, integrating these industries into thermoelectric generators or hybrid energy systems would not only significantly reduce energy costs but also enable a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. Policymakers have already announced special grant schemes to encourage research in this direction, and discussions are underway on a public‑private partnership model to bring the new technology to commercial scale.

In the future, this theory could be applied to various crystalline structures—such as graphene‑based hybrids, topological insulators, and high
