India’s business sector has injected new vigor into employment and investment in 2024, registering a 7.5% growth. Digital platforms and government incentives have linked small enterprises to the global market. Despite challenges, policy reforms and supply‑chain investment continue to sustain hope for the future.
India's business sector recorded a 7.5% annual growth in the first quarter of 2024, exceeding the 5.8% of the previous year. This growth occurred mainly in manufacturing, information technology, and agriculture-based industries. According to the National Statistics Bureau, 15.2 crore new companies were registered, contributing 3.6% to industrial production. The acceleration was driven by a revival in consumer demand and significant contributions from government incentive schemes. During the year, exports rose by 12% and imports fell by 4%, turning the trade balance in a positive direction.
A major reason for this growth was that small and medium enterprises gained access to global markets through digital platforms. Under the “Digital Infrastructure for Business” scheme released in 2023, 200 new digital hubs were established, providing online sales channels to 45% of entrepreneurs. Additionally, under the Startup India initiative, 3,000 startups received funding of 5 crore rupees, accelerating the pace of innovation.
Notable changes have also been observed in employment. In 2024, 4.2 crore new job opportunities were created, with 60% in rural areas and 40% in urban regions. According to data from the Ministry of Labour, average wages increased by 5.2%, while wages in the informal sector remained unchanged. This balance has moved the standard of living of workers toward improvement.
Challenges persist in the supply chain. An 8% rise in raw material prices and a 3% increase in transportation costs are putting pressure on businesses. To address this issue, the government has invested 1,200 crore rupees under the “Supply Chain Resilience” scheme, implementing measures to improve the logistics network and enhance stock management.
The latest government policy emphasizes tax incentives and regulatory simplification. In 2024, the corporate income tax rate was reduced from 25% to 22%, benefiting large companies. Moreover, the “e-filing” and “one-stop shop” initiatives digitized 90% of documentation processes, resulting in a 15% reduction in compliance costs. This step proved helpful in making businesses more competitive.
Experts believe that the combination of digital transformation and sustainable development policies could enable India’s business sector to achieve a 9.2% CAGR by 2030. According to a World Bank study, every 10% increase in digital investment yields a 0.4% rise in GDP. Furthermore, investments focused on green energy and clean technology are likely to generate new sources of employment.
Thus, India’s business sector is moving toward a prosperous future with digital innovation and policy reforms.
