The Kerala government has decided to operate special air‑conditioned buses during the Sabarimala pilgrimage to enhance facilities for Ayyappa devotees, making the journey safer and more comfortable.

In Kerala, millions of Ayyappa devotees traveling each year to the Sabarimala temple face various transportation challenges. Especially during the monsoon season, mountain roads become slippery and congested, raising questions about travelers' safety and convenience. Against this backdrop, the Kerala government has officially announced that special air‑conditioned (AC) buses will be provided for Ayyappa devotees in the upcoming pilgrimage season. This initiative is a move by the state's Tourism and Sacred Sites Development Department, aimed at offering travelers a comfortable, timely, and safe journey.

The government said the AC buses will operate on extensive routes from the main entry points to major cities—Kochi, Trivandrum, Calicut and Alappuzha. Each bus will be equipped with modern safety features, clean toilets, and an onboard information system, enabling travelers to receive details about routes, timings, and religious programs during the journey. This initiative will not only reduce travelers' physical fatigue but also lower the likelihood of accidents caused by overcrowding.

The Kerala government's step has been praised by Ayyappa devotees and religious organizations, and many social groups have described it as a positive move toward improving the pilgrimage experience. The government has said that in the future this model will be extended to travel to other sacred sites, raising expectations of overall improvement in Indian religious tourism.
