Palghar villagers continuously oppose Vadavan Port project.

In Maharashtra’s Palghar district, the local community has continued to strongly oppose the expansion of Vadavan Port, citing environmental damage and land‑displacement risks.

The Maharashtra government’s Vadhawan Port project, launched to strengthen national maritime trade, has received approvals in several phases over the past few years. This project is being developed under the national ‘SagarMala’ initiative, which aims to modernize India’s maritime infrastructure and boost export‑import activities. According to the plan, a multi‑purpose container terminal, dredging facilities, and an industrial zone will be established at Vadhawan, promising regional economic development. However, farmers and fishers living in many villages of Palghar consider this development a threat to their livelihoods and the ecosystem, and they have been staging continuous protests. Their main concerns are the lack of transparency in the land acquisition process, inadequate rehabilitation packages, and potential impacts on the marine environment.

The protests have not only involved peaceful marches and rallies but also saw several groups challenging the environmental clearances in local courts. Environmental experts have warned that the construction of the proposed terminal could affect marine life, especially fish breeding grounds and the habitats of seabirds. Meanwhile, the government has pledged to review the rehabilitation plan and launch training programmes to create alternative employment for affected families. Yet villagers argue that delays in implementing these measures and unequal distribution remain problems, eroding their confidence.

The future direction of the Vadhawan Port project remains uncertain. If local opposition persists, the project could face delays and cost overruns, while the government will have to grapple with the challenge of balancing economic development and environmental protection. In this context, establishing dialogue among all parties and implementing transparent rehabilitation measures are seen as the primary ways to resolve the dispute.
