India's steel sector maintains steady positive growth trend from April to August 2026
Between April and August 2026, India's steel sector continued to exhibit a steady positive growth trend, as shown by the latest data from the National Industry Association (NIS) and the Central Statistical Bureau. During this period, production capacity increased by 3.8%, while domestic consumption rose by 5.2%. Exports also grew by 4.5%, strengthening India's position in the global supply chain.
Several factors underpin this growth. First, large-scale investments in infrastructure—particularly the expansion of highways, railways, and ports—accelerated demand in the construction and automotive sectors. Second, the government's "Indian Steel Strategy 2026" introduced tax incentives and subsidy schemes to boost domestic production, thereby reducing raw material costs. Third, stability in raw material prices in the global market and improved trade agreements with Chinese and Australian suppliers created favorable conditions for exports.
However, the industry still faces several challenges. A downturn in raw material supply, fluctuations in energy costs, and stricter environmental regulations continue to pressure production costs. Nevertheless, with policy support and sustained investment, the Indian steel industry has not only met domestic demand but also played a significant role in global supply. This trend is expected to continue in the coming quarters, positioning India as a sustainable and competitive player in the global steel market.
